Why is there an International Space Station?

The International Space Station is almost 20 years old. The Russians started the building of the first space station in space in 1998, and crews have been living there since 2000.

As per NASA

The space station is as big inside as a house with five bedrooms. It has two bathrooms, a gymnasium and a big bay window. Six people are able to live there. It weighs almost a million pounds. It is big enough to cover a football field including the end zones. It has science labs from the United States, Russia, Japan and Europe.

What is the ISS?

The International Space Station is a large spacecraft in orbit around Earth. It serves as a home where crews of astronauts and cosmonauts live. The space station is also a unique science laboratory. Several nations worked together to build and use the space station. The space station is made of parts that were assembled in space by astronauts. It orbits Earth at an average altitude of 220 miles. It travels at 17,500 mph. This means it orbits Earth every 90 minutes.

India is not yet a participant in the ISS, primarily because of the costs involved. India has been involved in creating a frugal approach — an approach that costs less money — to space exploration. The greatest example of that is the Mangalayan.

As, technology advances, there are more and more new jobs that will become available. One of those could be working in space, on new space stations.
