Oculus rift is a company, that is owned by Facebook, that is one of the leading players in the area of virtual reality. They produce headsets that are used, primarily in gaming, but will soon be available for other uses. Developers across the world are building applications, using Oculus rift as the base. The Rift, as it is called,
is a virtual reality headset that offers high resolution graphics and an integrated speaker system, providing a full sensory experience that transports you into another realm. Using rotational and positional tracking, the Rift allows the user to sit, stand, or move freely.
Why is Oculus Rift more exciting than many other offerings in the VR space, this is why
You pull a helmet over your head, and suddenly, you’re inside a virtual world that seems completely lifelike. You can run around, fight, race, fly and create in a way that gamers (or anyone else for that matter) have never done before. What was once the stuff of Hollywood fantasy has now become a reality thanks to Oculus VR, creators of a personal head-mounted display named Oculus Rift.
or, as another enthusiast puts it
What makes gaming in Oculus Rift special is the ability to move your head and hands around and have that movement translate into the game world. For example, you’re able to actually look up and glance at the rear-view mirror when driving a car, you can turn around to see what monster is creeping up behind you, and you can interact with virtual items, like guns and tennis rackets, with your hands. It’s an experience that makes you feel like you’re a part of the game, and that’s something you can’t ever get by looking at a computer monitor or television.
They are currently in the news because, Facebook which believes that more and more people are going to use VR in applications beyond games, has dropped the price of the Oculus Rift headset by almost half (it now sells at $400 or approximately Rs.25,000). Oculus Rift hopes that more and more developers, engineers, and entrepreneurs will create more apps that use this technology.
