Data Science: Is this the Career Path for You ?

All around us, we hear about Big Data, Data Sciences, and more, and are told that these are the careers of the future. But, what is Data Science ?

Data Science, says datajobs

Data science is a multidisciplinary blend of data inference, algorithmm development, and technology in order to solve analytically complex problems.

At the core is data. Troves of raw information, streaming in and stored in enterprise data warehouses. Much to learn by mining it. Advanced capabilities we can build with it. Data science is ultimately about using this data in creative ways to generate business value

The University of Berkeley says

There is significant and growing demand for data-savvy professionals in businesses, public agencies, and nonprofits. The supply of professionals who can work effectively with data at scale is limited, and is reflected by rapidly rising salaries for data engineers, data scientists, statisticians, and data analysts.

There is just data everywhere, and there aren’t enough people to look at this data, and analyse it in meaningful ways.

Data is increasingly cheap and ubiquitous. We are now digitizing analog content that was created over centuries and collecting myriad new types of data from web logs, mobile devices, sensors, instruments, and transactions. IBM estimates that 90 percent of the data in the world today has been created in the past two years.

So, data scientists and analyst are in great demand. But, is this the career for you? what are skill sets needed to be a data scientist? You need to have an aptitude in at least one of three areas

Numbers : you need to be passionate about numbers, and be able to see patterns in these. A lot of data science is about people being able to see patterns.

Technology : Can you hack a solution to a problem using technology. When you see a problem, do you think of a technological solution to it — then maybe you need to look at data science as an option.

Grasp of Business : Are you able to see numbers, or a problem, and look for a business solution for it?

In all these three cases, Data Sciences will be a good option for you.
